New Zealand education is of international standard and offers choice to the international student. Whether it is secondary education, English language training or further and technical education, New Zealand has something for everyone.
Secondary school qualifications
The New Zealand secondary school certificate is called the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA). It is officially recognised in New Zealand and has international status.
Tertiary and vocational qualifications
New Zealand higher education has 10 levels of study with level 1 being a certificate and level 10 a doctoral degree. Each level is progressive in terms of complexity and difficulty. Below are the levels and their corresponding qualifications:
Certificates - Levels 1-4 |
Level 1 |
- This level involves repetitive tasks
- Students are exposed to a narrow range of knowledge and there is no generation of new ideas
- This is employed under close supervision

Level 2 |
- This levels involves moderate tasks that are routine and familiar
- There is little generation of new ideas
- There is directed activity

Level 3 |
- This level requires well developed skills
- The context and situation is by far familiar
- There is general supervision and opportunities for taking responsibility for others

Level 4 |
- This level uses a mixture of contexts familiar and unfamiliar
- There may be analytical or theoretical interpretation
- This is a self-directed activity

Diplomas - Levels 5 & 6 |

- This level requires specialist skills
- A broad knowledge base is required

Level 6 |
- This level requires basic research skills
- Bachelor's degrees/graduate diplomas

Bachelors degrees/graduate diplomas - Level 7 |

- This level requires wide ranging highly specialised skills in more than one area
- The student specialises in a particular discipline with in-depth knowledge of the subject area

- This level requires advanced research skills. There is self-directed research activity with minimal supervision

Masters degree - Level 9 |

- This level requires mastery over a subject area. There is a plan to carry out original scholarship or research project that meets international standard

- This level requires an original contribution to research or scholarship as judged by international standards.

All major education providers for the above named qualifications are registered with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).
English language qualifications
There are two types of English language schools - ones that issue qualifications and ones which don't.
General English
These are non-award courses preparing students to communicate effectively in the English language or for further study.
